Portland’s annual Japanese-American New Year celebration, Mochitsuki celebrates its 25th Anniversary by kicking off a newly re-formatted, month-long, free, virtual festival on January 1, 2021.
Watch engaging and entertaining Mochitsuki 2021 festival videos posted every day, January 1-31, on the Festival’s website (www.mochipdx.org), YouTube, and Instagram channels.
Festival videos, by local Japanese cultural groups, businesses and institutions, will showcase Japanese and Japanese-American New Year activities, customs and traditions.
From January 1st- to 6th:
- Learn about the Japanese tradition of visiting a Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine on New Year’s called Hatsumode.
- Watch local Chef Naoko demonstrate how to make Ozoni Japanese New Year soup.
- The Japanese Women Portland group teaches how to make Japanese New Year’s cards.
- Learn the basics of ‘Go’ — a Japanese chess game – from Portland’s Go Club.
- Enjoy Koto music performed by Oregon Koto Kai.
- And more!
Mochitsuki Portland’s Special 25th Anniversary LIVE Program, January 31, 1:00-2:30 PM (PST) will feature the Portland Japanese Consul General, a 25th Anniversary video, a tribute to past founding member Valerie Otani, music performances by Elena Moon Park, and a live Q & A panel with Asian-American artists.

About Mochitsuki Portland
An annual event since 1996, Mochitsuki Portland, is Portland, Oregon’s largest Japanese/Japanese-American New Year celebration and community gathering; collectively organized by numerous Japanese and Japanese-American cultural organizations from across the greater-Portland area.
Mochitsuki Portland’s annual January event brings the community together to celebrate the New Year, family and community bonds, and Japanese and Japanese-American culture and traditions. Past year festival attendance brought crowds of nearly 3000 to this 1-day event held on the Portland State University campus.

Mochitsuki Portland is a volunteer-run, non-profit, annual, community festival event; founded in 1996 by a collaboration of Japanese and Japanese-America community groups, spearheaded by the Portland chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and Portland Taiko. The Mochitsuki Portland festival is coordinated by an all-volunteer committee under the financial supervision and management of the Portland chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), a 501c3 charitable organization.
